OBERLIN, Kan. — Trailing 25-0 was only a signal for the McCook Bison to unleash hell in Red Devil land Thursday evening.

And the rally really ignited with freshmen!

McCook High “rookies” Trenton Raile and Tristan Campbell flattened back-to-back foes which started the fiery attack upon Phillipsburg, Kan.

Raile had lived in Oberlin until the family moved to McCook a few years ago.

“Trenton is a scrapper and he wanted to wrestle well in front of the old home crowd,” coach Nick Umscheid confirmed.

Yet Raile wasn’t the only Bison bringing points to prove into this Phillipsburg dual.

“We got it handed to us pretty good last year against them,” coach Nick Umscheid recalled. “I didn’t think we even had a chance on paper tonight. But about halfway through the dual, we saw we had a chance.”

Freshman Kalen McCorkle lost a gritty 10-8 decision at 150 pounds.

Bison coaches knew their best firepower was still in front of them.

“I told Canyon (Hosick) and Alex (Anthony) we really needed pins for both of them,” N.U. said.

The returning Class B state wrestlers did not disappoint.

Hosick returned from recent illness to dominate his 157-pound foe.

State medalist Anthony has been limited because of an ankle injury.

Yet he followed Hosick’s lead with another powerful pin.

The Bison had closed within 31-24 to set up another pivotal match for sophomore second-year wrestler Davien Hansen.

That’s right — Davien’s only starting year two of wrestling at any level.

“Davien’s a hard worker and a smart kid,” Umscheid said. “I don’t know if he knew what was on the line. He was taking some risks in the first period.”

The line pointed to Hansen wrestling a full six minutes at 190 pounds — and deny Phillipsburg of crucial pin points.

“If we were going to win, he (Hanson) had to be smart,” the coach explained. “He really gutted out the win — for the team, not himself.”

Plus Hanson wrestling “up” at 190 where he wrestled all three periods of a 6-3 defeat.

Most importantly, the Panthers’ win only added three points for a 34-24 lead.

McCook’s final two wrestlers — Quentin Terry (220) and heavyweight Spencer Steinbeck — then both received six forfeit points which finished this dual.

The Bison had won, 36-34, while Hansen being pinned would have given Phillipsburg a 37-36 victory.

“He looked ready to throw up,” Umscheid said about Hanson’s last 30 seconds of his match. “He knew he lost, but I think he felt pretty good that he didn’t let the team down.”

McCook followed this win immediately with a 52-17 dual triumph over host Decatur Community, Kan.

McCorkle scored a pin while Anthony and Hosick were both major decision “tech fall” winners.

The Bison added many bonus points due to Decatur open weights.

“I think tonight we showed a little of what we are capable of,” the coach concluded. “We were finally as close to full strength as we’ve been this season.”

The Bison will be busy again in Oberlin at Saturday’s Decatur Community Invitational.
