McCOOK, Neb. — A 24-point season opener didn’t stop the McCook High girls from responding like champs less than 24 hours later.

Senior Shawna Wilkinson scored 17 points while the Bison forced seven turnovers before one quarter was finished on Saturday.

Senior Tori Honn was a terror whether she was swiping steals, ripping down rebounds or even hitting her first three-pointer of the young season.

Other Bison jumped into this rebound effort like sophomore Brooklyn Gillen, who added seven points until her head hit that Valentine floor.

Gillen did not return, but the outlook still seemed all good following McCook’s 41-30 win over those Southwest Conference foe Badgers.

The Bison look much better at 1-1 entering this weekend’s Goodland, Kan., Topside Tournament.

Friday night did not bring many highlights.

It did show why the Chase County girls are 2-0 and primed to make district finals again — hopefully even farther.

Senior Bryn McNair brilliantly handled point guard with a game-high 21 points.

Yet several teammates hit clutch shots or made big plays throughout this dominant 56-24 road victory.

The Longhorns (2-0) trampled past Cozad in Thursday’s season opener.

McCook rarely trailed Saturday especially after Wilkinson found Honn for a layup to spark a rally from down 6-2.

Senior Kennedy Walter scored on a putback and Gillen’s shot off the glass put McCook ahead to stay at 10-8.

That’s because Wilkinson buried her first of two threes for a 13-8 advantage.

Honn’s three formed a later 31-21 advantage over Valentine (0-2).
