Gazette addict does not agree: Frogs No. 2 behind 'Dawgs

Wednesday, November 9, 2022

No sportscaster or pundit can match Gazette potato-shaped couch guy R.B. Headley's commitment to following 14 hours of college football virtually every Saturday.

Rancid Beef has been ranking the top teams every Sunday since Week 2 and here's how he sees today's true college football playoff rankings.

Rumblin Bumblin notes

— Georgia's a clear No. 1 after trouncing previous No. 1 Tennessee, not to mention 11 consecutive wins including last year's national championship. The Bulldogs might not have big-name stars, but athletes are everywhere on both sides of ball and Stetson Bennett has that sort of Ken Dorsey-Craig Krenzel-AJ McCarron perfect winning style for this college team.

— TCU has better resumes than Michigan or Ohio State. The Frogs play in a Big 12 Conference which is probably better than Big Ten with wins over Oklahoma, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Kansas and others....all ranked Top 25 when playing TCU.

However, the Frogs are most likely to fall this weekend with a road game at Texas.

— Michigan edges Ohio State after the Buckeyes struggled against 1-8 Northwestern. This wasn't Ireland, the Wildcats are 0-8 in their home country.

— Tennessee still has a fine list of wins behind few others so Vols only fell to No. 5. Watch out for South Carolina on Saturday, though.

— How do the Vols return to top four playoffs without winning SEC? Simple: Georgia beats LSU in the SEC final. Either Michigan or Ohio State must lose plus perhaps TCU, so there are many avenues for Vols to climb one spot. Unless the Oregon Ducks leapfrog them.

— Oregon could really build momentum this month with games against Washington, Utah and either USC or rematch vs. UCLA. But there's still that little 49-3 loss to Georgia in August. I don't see Oregon better than one-loss Tennessee or even TCU if a loss is close.

— Can LSU enter as the first two-loss team? Again, it's tough to overlook the Tigers' 40-13 home loss to Tennessee in October. SEC champs might be enough for LSU along with some help vs. Oregon, TCU and so forth. But RB would still say one-loss Tennessee over SEC champion, 11-2 LSU.

— Are USC, UCLA or Oregon worthy? Not of leaping into the top four. No way.

What's the best win for any of these teams besides Oregon over UCLA? UCLA's schedule strength has been epicly low and USC can't play defense.

The Pac 12 champion must look good while getting some help from three or four teams outside this conference losing late-season games.
