McCOOK, Neb. — Fans at Weiland Field will see a worthy final contest before playoffs when the Chadron Cardinals take on those unbeaten McCook Bison Friday evening.

Besides being for this C-1 district championship, the Bison are trying to finish their first 9-0 regular season in nearly a decade.

It won’t be easy.

The Chadron Cardinals are also playoff-bound with three receivers who’ve teamed to catch 12 touchdown passes this fall.

“I felt like Adams Central had a great receiving corps (last week), but Chadron is right up there,” coach Joe Vetrovsky said.

Chadron also ranks high in best names this year since senior Malachi Swallow has snabbed five TDs while averaging nearly 22 yards a catch.

Xavier Provence has been X-marks the spot since he has 20 receptions and another four scores.

Don’t forget senior Seth Gastick and his 12 catches for 340 yards, three TDs.

Plus sophomore tailback Quin Bailey already has 969 rushing yards with 11 journeys into end zones.

“Their quarterback (Broc Bailey) can take off and run too,” Vetrovsky observed. “We are starting to get ready for playoffs, and this game will about be like a playoff one.”

Senior Gage Wild sounds rugged. Sure enough, the Chadron senior averages a 10.6 tackles per game.

The 6’5” 215-pound Provence delivers another 10.4.

‘The strength of their team really seems to be in their linebackers,” Vetrovsky said. “They do a real good job of reading their keys and playing solid ‘D’.”

Of course, McCook has only allowed more than 14 points once all season.

They’ve not played an opponent who could finish closer than 14, including the C-1 Top 10 road win over Hastings Adams Central last week (28-14).

Only a fumbled kickoff fell on the end zone allowed Adams Central to double its point total.

““We do need to eliminate turnovers or other miscues that give team life,” Vetrovsky concluded. “Penalties as well.”
