McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College golf team started off the season Thursday posting a 295 to lead the Region IX field by 10 shots at Heritage Hills Golf Course.

Defending Region IX champion Eastern Wyoming is in second place 10 shots off the lead and Lamar is in third place by 23 shots.

“It was a very interesting round with a lot of birdies and several mental break-downs but the overall result was a very solid first day with a score of 295,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.

The McCook Community College golf team started off the season Thursday posting a 295 to lead the Region IX field by 10 shots at Heritage Hills Golf Course.

MCC also had the top individual score for the day and five of the six best individual Thursday rounds.

MCC sophomore Ethan Gough (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) shot a one-over par 73 to lead the field by one shot.

That field includes four teammates and one from Eastern Wyoming.

Tied for second with two-over 74s were Cayden Wynne (sophomore, Lincoln), Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah), Spencer Wishon (sophomore, Oberlin, Kan.), freshman Cade Cryer (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) who was playing in his first collegiate meet, and Eastern Wyoming’s Noah Taylor.

“We have five guys all contending for first so tomorrow should be fun and if we fix the mental stuff it could be a really great start to the season,” Loop said.

Payton Craw (sophomore, McCook) shot an 88 on the day.

Competing as individuals, freshmen Ashton Koetter (Seward) carded a 99 and Hunter Hansen (freshman, McCook) shot a 100.

The two-day tournament concludes Friday with a 9 a.m. start.
