McCook 'Y' swim team sparkles at Cornhusker State Games
LINCOLN, Neb. — The McCook summer swim team wrapped up its season at the Cornhusker State Games at the Fremont YMCA pool Friday and Saturday.
Over the course of two days, swimmers from across the state competed on a long course format, where one length was 50 meters which means fewer flip turns on a 50, 100 or 200 meter race.
While they have practiced in the McCook YMCA’s 25 meter pool since early June, the McCook swim team put on a good showing on the eastern end of the state.
First place finishes included McCook High School state qualifier Leah Spencer, who earned first in all three of her individual events.
Fellow MHS swimmers Emma Graff and Deacon Kinne also earned a first place medal in one of their events.
Those earning medals for McCook by placing in the top three included:
Boys 8 and under
Cooper Davidson, 100 meter free, second; 50 meter back, third; 50 meter free, second
Britton Blomstedt, 100 meter free, third; 50 meter back, second; 50 meter free, third
Girls 9-10
Rinlee Blomstedt, 100 meter breast, second
Boys 13-14
Derick Spencer, 100 meter back, second
Boys 15-18
Deacon Kinne, 200 meter back, third; 400 meter free, first
Caleb Wilkinson, 50 meter free, third
Girls 15-18
Emma Graff, 100 meter breast, second; 50 meter free, third; 200 meter breast, first
Leah Spencer, 100 meter free, first; 200 meter free, first; 200 meter individual medley, first
Arapahoe’s Taytum Roskop, who also swims for the McCook YMCA winter swim team, earned second in the girls 11-12 year old 50 meter free.
McCook relays placing in the top three included:
Boys 11-12, 200 meter medley: Cooper Davidson, Axel Blomstedt, Bronson Frazier, Britton Blomstedt, third
Boys 13-14, 400 meter free: Eli Graff, Derick Spencer, Aaron Spencer, Jackson Blomstedt, first
Mixed 15-18, 400 meter free: Emma Graff, Deacon Kinne, Caleb Wilkinson, Leah Spencer, first
Mixed 15-18, 400 meter medley: Emma Graff, Deacon Kinne, Caleb Wilkinson, Leah Spencer, second
The McCook swim and dive team will hit the pool again this weekend as the state games continue with diving Saturday at the Woods Pool in Lincoln.
The McCook swimmers will take a brief break before returning to the pool in mid-September for the YMCA youth swim league.
