McCOOK, Neb. — The charm and character of older homes in McCook will be explored at an upcoming Historical Homes of McCook tour at McCook Community College on Tuesday, May 3.

Set for 7-9 p.m., the virtual tour and class will include less-known vintage homes in McCook and be moderated by McCook Gazette columnist, Sue Doak. The tour will include before and after pictures of 10 older homes in McCook and the history behind the people who used to live there or built the homes, Doak said. The class also will include tips on how to look up and identify your own home or building, using old city maps such as the Sanborn maps and accessing information at the county clerk’s office. The Sanborn maps include original street names that are no longer used in McCook, Doak said.

Doak is an unabashed fan of all things history. She and her husband live in and have restored an older home in McCook, so vintage homes have always had a special place in her heart. “I just love them, the history behind them and how they’ve changed through the years,” she said.

She also likes the distinctive, sometimes quirky, characteristics of older homes such as built-in cabinetry, nooks and crannies, stained glass windows and detailed hardware. “Older homes are very unique in their design and aren’t cookie cutter houses,” she said, with each one having a charm of its own.

The virtual tour at the college will work out well, as the class won’t have to be cancelled for bad weather, Doak said. “We won’t have to walk around in the wind.”

Pre-registration is required, by calling (308) 345-8122, or by registering online at BCEregister.mpcc.edu. Cost is $25.
