Letter to the Editor

Happy to hear of high court visit to MHS

Tuesday, April 12, 2022

Dear Editor,

I was very pleased to read in The McCook Gazette the article: “Nebraska Supreme Court Plans Session at McCook High School” (April 8 issue).

This will be a wonderful experience on Thursday, April 28, to educate students by showcasing a real-live case in conjunction with the observance of “Law Day” which is May 1st annually.

This occasion will mark the first time that the Nebraska State Supreme Court has come to McCook. I have family in the McCook and Cambridge areas and it would be difficult for them to drive to Lincoln to see normal judicial proceedings, so I am glad that the Supreme Court will come to the area. Other States have this similar program such as Kansas and Texas, I attended one such event, and even got to meet the Texas Chief Justice. It was quite a thrilling experience to see how Justices are supposed to “weigh laws for constitutionality” and not “make law”. I wish the students well in learning about our legal system and how, as the Constitution states, we can help form a more perfect Union. I also wish the Justices well in conducting their oral arguments with prudence and decorum.

Sincerely,

James A. Marples

Longview, Texas
