RED WILLOW SRA, Neb. — Mother Nature isn’t exactly cooperating this year for the Nebraska Games and Parks’ First Day Hike. Frigid temperatures and the area’s first snow of the season is predicted for Saturday, Jan. 1.

But the First Day Hike is still planned for Saturday, Jan. 1 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Red Willow State Recreation Area, north of McCook. Participants are encouraged to dress very warmly from head to toe and to wear snow boots if possible.

Organizers of the Republican River Fitness Series will be posted at campsite 48 at the Willow View Campground with information and hot chocolate. There will also be a warm campfire going, along with prizes from past fitness series races for those who brave the elements.

The First Day Hike is a great way to start off 2022 on a healthy note and enjoy the area’s natural resources. But if the weather is a deterrent on Saturday, people are still encouraged to take to the trails on Sunday or this first week or month of 2022 in the spirit of the First Day Hike.

There is no charge or registration, but participants must have a 2022 state park permit for their vehicle.
