Bison wrestling girls reach top five in historic debut

STAPLETON, Neb. — McCook High's Makayla Pate went 5-0 to win a 165-pound championship and the new Bison girls wrestling team finished fifth among 14 Sandhills Valley Invite teams on Saturday.

Pate (5-0) pinned four foes while also winning a 4-3 thriller over Mariah Duran from host Sandhills Valley.

Teammate Paige Witt made history with the first McCook girls' wrestling win when she pinned Ogallala's Naila Ford in 3:11. Witt placed second among 100-pound participants.

Noleigh Stephens also took second at 152.
