Letter to the Editor

Area residents should know, understand fair housing rights

Friday, April 9, 2021

Dear Editor,

Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment would like to take this time to let the residents of southwest Nebraska to know and understand their fair housing rights.

The Fair Housing Act makes discrimination in the sale, rental, and advertising in housing unlawful, and assures that our citizens are treated equally. It prohibits housing discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, marital status, or familial status.

Unfortunately, discrimination continues to occur and prevents many people from having the chance to live in safe, affordable, quality housing. A lack of understanding about fair housing rights and how the laws can be enforced could be a barrier to fair housing.

Through education and awareness, families and individuals can recognize discrimination and take steps towards fair treatment. Anyone who feels that they have been discriminated against can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD is the federal agency designated to enforce the Fair Housing Act.

Until discrimination is recognized and addressed, many Nebraskans will continue to lack safe, affordable, quality housing. It is our right and responsibility to work together so that everyone as the right to housing free from discrimination.

If you would like more information on fair housing rights, please go to our website, www.southwestne.com and click on the HUD Fair Housing link at the bottom of the page or call SWNCBC’s Fair Housing Representative, Amy Thelander at 308-352-4338
