McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College women turned the ball over 30 times Wednesday night but were able to finesse a 60-56 win over Lamar in the opening game of the Region IX South schedule.

“We are 1-0 in our region and that is a positive,” MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett said.

The game was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday but pushed back to Wednesday because Lamar had some transportation issues.

The two teams spent much of the first quarter slowly exchanging the lead. Lamar went up by five points with 2:54 left in the first period but the Indians came back to lead 14-12 at the period break and Sophomore Carla Torrubia Cano (sophomore, Melilla Spain) hit a 3-pointer with time expiring in the first half to put MCC up 30-27.

MCC shot 32.2 percent from the field in the first half and committed 13 turnovers, but got even more sloppy with 17 turnovers in the second half.

Sophomore Amiya Dartest (Jennings, La.) led MCC with 13 points – 10 of those came in the first half. Sophomore Gail Whiting (sophomore, Montgomery, Ala.) scored seven points, had six rebounds, two assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

Estrella “Star” Avalos (sophomore. Las Cruces, N.M.) scored 12 points and had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
