Falcons, Eagles fall short to start playoffs

MAYWOOD, Neb. — Hitchcock County’s girls held a lead until the 17-5 fourth quarter lifted Wallace to its 49-40 subdistrict playoff win Monday evening.

The Wildcats (8-13 record) featured five players with eight points more led by freshman Dajana Garrison’s 10.

They advance into subdistrict semifinals today against No. 1 Maywood-Hayes Center.

Hitchcock County (2-20) certainly gained experience with a roster featuring only one senior in post Elizabeth Shaffert.

Juniors Lindsey Rippen, Aimee Merrill and Kailee Kolbet will lead the Falcons into next season.

They erased an early 16-11 deficit Monday, even pulling in front 35-32 thanks to a 14-7 third-quarter surge before Wallace pulled off its own final comeback.

Meanwhile, Southern Valley still posted a winning 11-10 final record despiet Monday’s 47-39 subdistrict loss to Blue Hill at Wood River.

Subdistricts continue today including the D1-11 semifinals at Cambridge High. No. 1 Dundy County-Stratton meets No. 4 Arapahoe at 6 p.m.

Neighbors Cambridge (11-12) and Southwest (9-10) follow with the winners in Thursday’s title game.
