McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook City Council will be asked to approve a resolution concerning opening the city ballparks, at a special meeting Wednesday, May 27, 12 p.m. noon at the city council chambers at the McCook Municipal Building.

Gov. Pete Ricketts has relaxed COVID-19 directed health measures to allow for baseball and softball to resume on June 1, with a list of social distancing stipulations for teams and spectators to adhere to. These include no use of the bleaches for fans, fans are limited to immediate family members who must bring their own lawn chairs to use, fans should keep six feet apart from different household units and concession stands are closed.

At the regular McCook City Council meeting on May 18, city staff recommended to the council that the ballparks be re-opened, with a waiver signed by participants that releases the city from any liability from COVID-19.

Local Legion baseball coaches met May 21 and decided to play 25 or 26 games from June 18 through July 30, with practice beginning June 1. No tournaments will be played this year and overnight stays will be avoided.

The council will be asked to approve a resolution that states any individual, organization or group sponsoring youth baseball or softball enter into the “COVID-19 License and Management Agreement” for using city property for youth baseball and softball and requires all interested parties to sign the “Management Agreement” to use the ballparks. It also mandates that all participates and spectators comply with the directed health measures issued by the local, state and federal governments relating to the COVID-19 virus.
