DC-S Tigers overpower Raiders

BENKELMAN, Neb. — Medicine Valley’s determined team of six girls didn’t go down without taking some good shots Tuesday night against D-1 No. 6 Dundy County-Stratton.

The Raiders brought strong forwards Sabra Schmidt and Kaylynn Roblee, who teamed to grab 23 rebounds.

Junior Acelyn Klein sent 13 points through the nets. When teammate Jessa Bailey buried a super step-back jumper over the nearest Tiger, Med Valley owned a 13-11 lead.

Yet the Raiders didn’t have four quarters of answers against their deep and talented foes.

Junior Maggie Lutz’s first basket ignited a 10-0 run turning 17-16 into the Tigers’ 27-16 halftime margin.

Klein delivered one more inside three-point play — but nothing could match DC-S sharpshooter McKinzie Baney.

Baney broke open to hit one three-pointer, then struck again from the other side of her home basket.

She went on to hit four three-pointers in an efficient five attempts and Dundy County-Stratton never looked back during an eventual 54-34 victory.

The Tigers are now 11-1 entering a rare off weekend before visiting Wallace Tuesday evening.

They’ll take a relentless defense that forced 35 Raider turnovers Thursday night.

Senior guard Sable Lambley swiped seven steals besides scoring 10 more points.

Baney and senior Sydney Reichert each swiped five steals.

Senior Jessie Freeland delivered five assists while adding eight points.

Freeland scored the game’s first two baskets, though both Roblee and Schmidt answered to keep Med Valley (4-9 record) even at four points apiece.

Baney quickly drilled her first long-range bomb.

Nothing early fazed the visiting Raiders.

Bailey soon found lone Raider reserve Milla Far, and her inside score forced a 10-10 tie.

The game remained an 11-11 deadlock until Bailey’s jumper gave Med Valley its one and only lead of this game.

Schmidt collected a game-high 13 rebounds while Roblee took down 10. Overall, Medicine Valley owned a 36-24 rebounding advantage.

Klein connected on her only three-point attempt. The Raiders finished just one-for-five and shot 32 percent overall.
