CRETE, Neb. – The McCook Community College women’s basketball team rolled to an 81-55 win over the Doane University JVs Thursday.

MCC started the game with a 9-0 run but didn’t maintain that crisp play.

After leading the first quarter 21-11, the Lady Indians were outscored 17-12 in the second quarter.

“We turned the ball over and put them on the free throw line too many times in the first half and allowed them to stay in the game,” MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett said.

MCC finished the game with 25 turnovers and sent Doane to the line 31 times.

The coach said the Lady Indians came out and executed better in the second half and turned up the defensive effort.

“We also were able to knock down some shoots that really opened the game for us,” Pritchett said. “Carla shot the ball extremely well again, Gail Whiting was huge defensive presence for us as we went a little smaller with Makenna Bodette in foul trouble.”

Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) was one of three players with 19 points on the night making all four of her 3-point attempts in the second half and was five-for-six for the game and tied for team-high honors with 10 rebounds and five steals.

Freshman Jadelyn Whiting (Montgomery, Ala.) also had 19 points, 10 boards, and five steals.

Sophomore Maketta Bodette had 19 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Paula Rosello Mateu, (Barcelona, Spain) had 13 points Miles Community College (Mont.)

MCC shot 47.8 percent from the field, 46.7 on 15 shots from beyond the 3-point line and 83.3 percent on 12 free throw shots.

The Lady Indians out-rebounded the Tigers 47-31.

“I’m excited to see how we come out to play tomorrow with the second game of three this weekend,” Pritchett concluded.

MCC improves to 7-1 on the season and will take on 3-3 Western Wyoming at 5:30 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center as part of the women’s/men’s doubleheader.

On Saturday, the MCC women will close out 2019 home slate with a 4 p.m. game against the MCC All-Stars, a team of alumni and stars from the area.
