Letter to the Editor

Paid political letter — Bruce Baker would serve citizens well

Friday, October 19, 2018

Dear Editor,

In retirement, I have been blessed to be allowed to come to the McCook Gazette office whenever I wish to do whatever I wish.

I call these my “Do as I Damned Please” years.

I sit just outside the office of Shary Skiles, the Gazette publisher. Bruce Baker, a newly named advertising executive for the newspaper, sits just to the north of me.

It’s been great to have Bruce as a desk neighbor these past few months because every day I come in, we end up discussing the news of the day.

That’s a kick because we both used to be news hounds, covering the city beat for the Gazette.

I’m telling you all this because I’ve discovered — during our frequent chats — that Bruce is a passionate guy who cares deeply about the community of McCook. That’s the result of Bruce covering the McCook City Council for nine years before agreeing to use his persuasive powers to uplift the Gazette’s advertising revenues.

What I’m leading up to is this: I am offering my hearty endorsement for Bruce Baker to be one of the three candidates chosen to serve four-year terms as members of the McCook City Council.

Bruce cares. After nine years of covering the Council — attending more than 450 meetings in the process — he knows as much about city issues as any other person, with the possible exception of the City Manager, Nate Schneider, who has handled city business every day for the past four years and four months.

As I go public with my endorsement of Bruce Baker, I want everyone to know that I know and like all five candidates: Mayor Mike Gonzales; Incumbent Gene Weedin; and Candidates Bruce Baker; Bill Longnecker, and Jared Muehlekamp, and believe that all are worthy of election.

We are fortunate, as McCookites, that they have offered to serve as decision-makers for the city.

Please give each of the candidates your full and fair consideration. McCook will be well served by whoever is elected

Respectfully submitted,

Gene O. Morris

McCook, Neb.
