KEARNEY, Neb. — McCook’s tennis boys delivered both trouncings and tight wins while conquering Grand Island Central Catholic, 8-1, Monday afternoon.

No. 1 singles Zion Moyer showed Bison dominance with an 8-0 victory over the top GICC challenger.

No. 1 doubles Caden Bortner and Mason Michaelis were almost as decisive throughout an 8-1 triumph.

Moyer joined senior Syd Wier to down the No. 3 doubles 8-1.

However, McCook also faced some tough tests like Logan Barenberg at No. 4 singles.

Barenberg even got pushed into a tie-breaker — where he still prevailed by a 9-8 (7-4) final.

Isaac Hinze and Barenberg also teamed to win 8-6 against the No. 2 Crusader combination.

Other Bison wins were Michaelis 8-2 at No. 3 singles, Bortner 8-4 at No. 5 singles and Hinze 8-3 at No. 6 singles.

McCook’s only loss was a tough 8-6 battle for Wier in the No. 2 singles match.

The Bison split their duals on Monday since Kearney Catholic captured a 6-3 victory which avenged an earlier McCook win in August.

Wier earned a No. 2 singles win, 8-4, and Michaelis matched that victory at No. 3

McCook’s double win was Barenberg and Hinze, 8-4, at No. 2.

JV sweep

McCook’s JV boys won both their duals, 7-1, over Kearney Catholic and 5-3 against GICC.

Joel Gray, Nick Wolvin, Bendan Eckhart and Paul Stoney were all two-match winners vs. K.C. The same four swept through all four doubles matches with GICC. Eckhart added an 6-2 singles victory.
