Trailing 16-0, Bison still find ways to win
McCOOK, Neb. — A stunning 75-yard touchdown didn’t stagger the McCook freshmen long enough for Hershey’s JV football team on Monday.
The visiting Panthers scored again to take a quick 16-0 lead.
No sweat! Well, maybe some sweat.
Luke Maris’ 45-yard fumble return started the Bison run of 22 unanswered points to a 22-16 comeback win.
“This was a good game for our kids against a good Hershey JV team,” coach Bill Ramsay commented. “We started the game in a big hole in the first couple of minutes, but the guys relaxed and started making some plays.”
Ramsay confirmed that Maris stripping the ball from a Panther and taking it to McCook’s first six points “was a big play.”
The Bison also picked off two Hershey passes which set up scoring chances.
However, they still trailed 16-6 into the third quarter until Mark Arp shook loose on a 25-yard touchdown gallop.
Alec Langan lowered the boom while adding a two-point conversion and making it 16-14.
Finally, the Bison took their first lead with Maris’ four-yard, fourth-quarter TD run.
He also delivered the last two victory-clinching points.
“In the second half, we adjusted to the size of Hershey,” Ramsay explained. “Our lines started to control both lines of scrimmage. Our backs hit the holes a little harder and we were able to move the ball.”
The undefeated McCook freshmen move on to a Sept. 21 contest at Class A Kearney.
“We will hit the practice field hard to improve our game,” the coach concluded.
