Alfred Arlo Hinton

April 19, 1923 - Dec. 24, 2016

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Alfred Arlo Hinton was born on April 19, 1923, son of Albert and Mary Berniece (Blake) Hinton. After this last short illness, he departed this life on Dec. 24, 2016, at the Cambridge (Tri-Valleys) Nursing home at the age of 93.

Alfred was born at Stockville, Neb., and lived on a farm three miles west of Stockville. He attended Rising Sun elementary school district 31. He graduated from Stockville High School in 1942. In 1946, Alfred began his teaching career in the one-room rural school known as the Rupert school District No. 101, teaching there one year and then the next two years teaching at the Bailey school, District No. 20. He then attended Nebraska State Teachers college at Kearney and graduated in 1953 with a BA degree in business education.

The fall of that same year, he began teaching at Lebanon High School, where he taught two years. He then went to Julesburg, Colo., and while he was there, spent the next four summers attending the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, where he received his Master's Degree in business education in 1961. After teaching seven years in Colorado, six years at Julesburg and one in Peetz, he then moved east to teach one year in Hamburg, Iowa, two years in Kansas City, Kan., and finally nine years in Goodland, Kan.

On June 12, 1976, having finished his final year at Goodland, he married Lena Cohen of Denver and he moved to Denver, as Lena was employed at Rocky Mountain Hospital as supervisor of the histology department. Alfred was a substitute teacher at Parks Business College and of the 10 years he lived in Denver, the last five were spent working in a business office at St. Luke's Hospital. When his marriage ended, Alfred moved back to Bartley, Neb., where he retired.

In his younger years, while Alfred was living on the farm, he enjoyed riding and working with horses. Later on, traveling, antiques, and photography became his main interests. And as we all know, Alfred loved attending auctions and sales and was a "collector" of many different items.

Alfred was a member of the McCook Church of Christ and attended regularly until he was no longer able to do that. He studied with and was baptized by Randy Hayes on Oct. 2, 2005. In November 2007, Alfred, Ralph, and Zelda went to live at the retirement plaza in Cambridge. Then in January 2016, because of declining health, it was necessary for Alfred to move into the Cambridge Manor. As his health improved, he was able to enjoy several of the activities there.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents Albert & Mary Berniece Hinton; two brothers, Dean and Ralph Hinton; and sister, Zelda Maret.

Alfred is survived by eight nieces and nephews and their spouses; nephew, Deloit Hinton and wife Carol of Pleasanton, Calif.; niece, Bernita Owens and husband, John of Stockville; nephew, Everett Hinton and wife, Ann of Hastings, Neb.; nephew, Laurence Hinton and wife, Tamara of North Platte, Neb.; niece, Lorraine Herrick of Champion, Neb.; nephew, LaVerne Maret and wife, Gene of Wilsonville, Neb.; niece, Marlene Mustion of Indianola, Neb.; and niece, Margene Hayes and husband, Randy of Imperial, Neb.
