Time to heal wounds, move nation forward

Wednesday, November 9, 2016

We were little surprised when a mock election at Central Elementary this week went for Donald Trump.

Such votes have been very accurate over the years, in our recollection, and all the polls indicated that Hillary Clinton would win.

Score another one for the kids.

They're probably soaking up the opinions they hear at home, and they're young enough that mom's and dad's opinion still carries some weight.

It will take time for the news to sink in, both for supporters of both candidates, Hillary Clinton supporters who thought her election was a sure thing, and Donald Trump boosters who saw him as a long shot -- and that includes about everyone except the candidate himself.

Trump should realize his election was as much a vote against his opponent as an endorsement of his own candidacy.

Let's hope he carries through with his promise to surround himself with the best and brightest, and they are able to help him keep his ego and tongue under control.

Republicans won't be able to blame the opposition for any failure, now that they have control of the Senate, House and White House, but few Republicans were willing to go out on a limb for their party's nominee before Tuesday's election.

Even conservative Nebraska moved to the right, replacing first-term Democrat Rep. Brad Ashford with Republican Don Bacon in the 2nd Congressional District. Bacon is a retired Air Force brigadier general.

Conservatives also revolted against the Legislature, repealing a law to end capital punishment.

Lancaster County was the only county that voted against restoring the death penalty; Douglas County favored it slightly and rural counties favored overturning the Legislature's action 4-1.

Hitchcock County voters narrowly recalled their county assessor, apparently by just wide enough margin to avoid an automatic recall.

The way the controversy divided the county was a microcosm of the way our nation was divided by this year's presidential election.

It's time for all of us, from local neighborhoods to the halls of Congress to work together to guide our nation in a positive director.
