Somebody should do something? Now you can!

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

Somebody should do something about that.

How many times have you thought that after you saw someone suffering through an injustice, abuse or neglect? Someone in need or with a potential unrealized?

Many are quick to act on their own, and we're grateful people like them.

But there are many things we can't do on our own and many ways we can accomplish much more by working together.

Thursday is just such an opportunity.

From midnight to midnight, area residents will have an opportunity to take part in a tangible way through Big Give McCook, a one-day concept being adopted by more and more communities around the country.

By taking part, you can help do something about issues that touch your heart.

Know someone who has trouble reading? Adult Basic Education is one of the agencies receiving support from Big Give McCook.

The Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska with efforts like Head Start, homelessness prevention and the commodity supplemental food program.

Someone facing abuse by a partner or family member? Domestic Abuse/Sexual Assault Services is another agency.

Worried about physical fitness or childhood obesity? The Ed Thomas YMCA can help, as well as providing after-school services through the Live Y'ers.

Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska offers a juvenile and young adult pretrial diversion program to try to salvage young lives headed down a dangerous path.

The McCook Arts Council works to offer cultural events that make our community a better place to life.

McCook Community Chest is an umbrella organization that supports numerous causes.

Pets who are left homeless through no fault of their own receive shelter and a second chance through the McCook Humane Society.

Children caught in custody and visitation issues find support through the Prairie Plains Court Appointed Special Advocacy program.

The Share the Heat program can help by utility bills through bitterly cold winter months, and more families can own their own homes through the Southwest Nebraska Habitat for Humanity.

Adults can help kids be more successful in school through the TeamMates Mentoring Program, and the Salvation Army is there to help individuals who have nowhere else to turn.
