Cut budgets 2 percent

Tuesday, August 30, 2016

I would like to follow up on Mr. Trail's comment on "Bite the other side of the apple."

During the past few weeks, the Gazette has had several reports of taxing entities not able to reach their budget request. Their solution is simply to add a fee or tax to make a shortfall go away.

To give everyone 2 or 3 percent is not a balanced raise. Any increase in salaries should be based on performance. I'm sure it makes it easier for the department head to not have to make the decision.

A 3 percent raise, if not given to those between and $100,000 and $200,000 range, would not suddenly make their diet consist of peanut butter and soda crackers.

When 3 percent of $100,000 that is compounded for the next several budget sessions gets to be some serious money.

To those making $30,000, the 3 percent is a very good benefit. (To) the comment about "I can get more dollars else" the answer is "go ahead."

There are other considerations. I sell my house, move and buy another house.

I believe that all tax-supported entities need to have a 2 percent cut in the past year's budget. After two years of the 2 percent budget cuts, then you will find the entities that need more taxpayer dollars.

"Bite the other side of the apple."
