Vote for economic development plan

Monday, May 2, 2016

Dear Editor,

Last year, McCook voters approved extending the city's quarter-cent sales tax for economic development for several more years. But in order for those funds to be used to support economic development -- job creation, infrastructure, housing, etc. -- voters must give the City Council approval.

Your vote FOR the economic development program in this election ensures our city leaders have the tools necessary to support a strong local economy.

The MEDC has done a good job using the funds to support local jobs right here in McCook. The program is well-run and has oversight from the City Council and a citizen committee. We can be confident that the funds are spent wisely on our behalf. If we don't vote for the economic development program in this election, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

The sales tax has already been approved by voters, so whether the economic development program is approved or not, we will be paying the tax.

So it's really a no-brainer to take the next step and vote FOR the economic development program. If we don't, we'll be paying the sales tax but not getting the economic development benefits.

Sincerely,

Bill and Sandy Graves,

McCook, Neb.
