McCook draws attention as top 'beautiful town'

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

McCook will have to regroup following the narrow defeat of the economic development portion of the local option sales tax, while voters passed a 15-year extention of the regular 1.5 percent sales tax, until 2033.

Whatever the future of economic development looks like, McCook has plenty of things going for it. As a trade center for Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas, we offer a surprising number services, attractions and opportunities for employment for a town our size.

The latest affirmation comes from the culturetrip.com, which named McCook one of "The 10 Most Beautiful Towns in Nebraska."

It joined Nebraska City, Red Cloud, Scottsbluff, Aurora, Seward, Chadron, Papillion, Valentine and Ashland in receiving the designation.

Writer Helen Armitage described McCook thusly:

"Located in the rolling hills of southwest Nebraska, McCook was founded in 1882 and quickly grew into a railway boomtown on the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. Today a bustling community of just under 8,000, McCook boasts all the comforts of urban living with plenty of small town charm: its vibrant downtown is home to a host of eateries, specialty shops and cultural venues, while the town hosts fun events including the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival and the Red Willow County Fair. For fans of architecture, McCook is also home to the Harvey P. Sutton House -- a private residence designed by acclaimed architect Frank Lloyd Wright and a stunning example of his early signature Prairie School designs."

  • Sometimes we do not see the forest because of the trees. McCook is a beautiful town. It has much to offer, a past to be proud of and an unlimited future.

  • You must be a delite to live with SWNE. While away in the panhandle last week I met several people, two of which commented on how, and I'll quote the 1st, paraphrase the 2nd, "Pleasant and clean McCook is, its nice to see the residents of a town take pride in their community" He was a High School Coach that had been down recently for a school activity. The 2nd told me of an incedent that led to her realize how "nice" (her word) the people of McCook are as she was assisted in her ordeal by 3 different people who were "actually pleased to offer assistance".

Perhaps your distaste for McCook isn't so much McCook as it is you. As much as you dislike the City, and boast on how you moved away and are much happier now, you certainly keep up on the area. I had a horrible accident once, and you know what..... I've never gone back to that location and have only brought it up about 4 times in the past 10 years, I didn't care for it, so I've moved on without looking back, might I recommend a similar approach for you because......... you're simply not living a full life, harboring resentment within you heart.

  • I am sure that tricky nicky is also a "delite" (great spelling nicky) to be around, constantly telling others how they should think and act! Makes for a beautiful town, for sure.

  • Just a thought, when handing out advice to others on how to think and live, one might consider their own credibility before giving such advice??
