Accentuate the positive

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Dear Editor,

In the 1940s, songwriter Johnny Mercer wrote "Accentuate the Positive and Eliminate the Negative."

It was a clever tune with an important message.

The theme of it ties in with our problem-ridden immigration reform and illegals crossing the Mexican border into the U.S.

Terrible living conditions in Mexico and Central America threaten the safety of honest people and their families. Criminals control their communities and drug lords take over. Gang-style crimes are common.

Some people argue that President Obama's order for amnesty is not constitutional. They say he cannot legally use his executive power to rule on it.

Failure of Congress to act upon this problem and pass legislation on it has compounded the situation.

There seems to be no simple way to separate hard-working individuals from the criminals crossing the border. Criminals repeatedly sneak over the Mexican border. The U.S. deports them and they return to our country. They end up being classified as a "repeat offenders."

Currently we are involved in an ongoing battle between political parties over this situation.

Something needs to change. We must accentuate the positive not the negative.
