Nebraskans keep up giving tradition
Monday, December 8, 2014
We just experienced the seasonal celebration when we're supposed to give thanks for all our blessings, and we're now knee-deep in preparing for what is supposed to be a day for giving -- although most of us tend get a little more excited what we might receive rather than what we're giving.
But Nebraskans seem to have it right again, putting the emphasis on giving, according to the national personal finance outlet WalletHub.
"Nebraskans are very generous people," Gov. Dave Heineman said in citing the study. "We care deeply about our neighbors, friends and communities. Every day, Nebraskans share their talents, time and resources to keep Nebraska a great place to live, to work and to raise a family."
WalletHub found that Nebraska was fifth in volunteer rate and percent of population claiming to have donated time, 15th in the number of charities per capita and 16th in the percent of donated income.
First Lady Sally Ganem called on Nebraskans to continue the trend by volunteering at a community center or shelter, looking in on a sick or elderly neighbor, signing up at a local food bank or homeless center, or discovering one of many local opportunities to volunteer.
"Volunteerism is one thing that sets Nebraska apart," Ganem said. "We know we can always count on our neighbors to come forward and lend a hand when it is needed."
Since 2013, our state has ranked fifth in volunteerism among the 50 states and Washington D.C., according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that helps Americans engage in volunteer activities in their community.
