Ice bucket caution

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Dear Editor,

The Ice Bucket Challenge is currently the big craze and most of you have probably heard about it and may have already taken the challenge. Those challenged are asked to either dump an ice bucket of cold water over their head or donate to ALS research. Most do both and it has been very successful in raising awareness of ALS which is a good thing. But people should consider where their donations go and how the money is used.

So far most of the millions of dollars raised have gone to the ALS association, Many of you might not be aware that the ALSA has admitted that it gives some of it's money to embryonic stem cell research and has no qualms about doing so. This fact raises ethical concerns for pro-life people.

For those of us who are concerned I want to inform you that there are alternatives for our donations that use only ethical stem cell sources. If you have not made your donation yet for ALS here are two sites that do not use embryonic cells for their research.

The John Paul 11 Medical Research Institute is doing research in several areas including ALS and does not support embryonic stem cell research. Their address is 540 East Jefferson, Suite 202, Iowa City IA. 52245. You can also donate through their web site.

Researchers at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN are currently doing clinical trials for patients with ALS using Adult Stem Cells. Dr. Anthony J. Windebank and his team are conducting the research and you can donate by going to his web page and specify that your donations go to him

Respectfully,

Sally Loescher,

McCook, Nebraska
