Letter to the Editor

Disappointed

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Dear Editor,

I was disappointed with our county commissioners' choice of how to spend our tax dollars. This same board was advised by a consulting firm and our county attorney in June 2011 to not get involved with subdivision roads. None of the facts or laws have changed since that time. The board stated that it was not something they were required to do, but something they felt was a good thing to do.

By voting to help one subdivision out with roads, the commissioners are setting a precedent that anyone can follow. This will extend the county's liability issues, plus can lead to a large increase in road costs for the county according to Mr. McNutt. We were told it was just one road, the main road. At the meeting this morning, the commissioners called it the first phase of their plan for the Calabria roads.

Our subdivision has never taken tax dollars and does not plan to as long as we can take care of it ourselves. I feel this vote will lead to more requests in the future. According to Vesta Dack, future requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. This does not seem like an equal or fair way to determne how our county tax dollars will be spent to me.

When will all the unnecessary spending stop?

Darlene Nothnagel,

McCook, Nebraska

  • Well, no tax dollars except for the $150,000 water grant from USDA.
