Welcome rain fails to put damper on weekend activities

Monday, June 9, 2014

Was it the best of both worlds, or a pleasant compromise?

We'll probably find somebody complaining about the rains, but they'll be vastly outnumbered by those of us who are grateful for long-overdue precipitation.

Friday's horse race at the John Mullen Pro-Am had to be called for lightning on the 17th hole, but finished up Saturday morning.

Tractor Relay Across Nebraska participants and friends enjoyed a barbecue Friday night in Norris Park and Silver Creek got in a few songs before the event was wisely called off just before monsoon-like wind and rains arrived.

The rest of the pro-am and the MS Walk in Norris Park went off without a hitch Saturday and most of us enjoyed hearing the rain on the roof overnight with 2 inches and counting this morning.

We were under a flood warning as a result, and McCook's storm sewer system was put to a test after many months of drought, but as we mentioned in the opening, complaints will be few and far between.

That should include complaints about "nothing to do" this summer.

If you've been infected by the acting bug, auditions for the "Odd Couple" were Sunday and today; call Bill Marshall at (308) 340-2908 for more information. And, next week, take in a performance of the Fox Theatre Operations and Events Committee's summer melodrama, "The Treasure of Shifer River" at 7:30 Wednesday, June 18 at the fox.

If visual arts are more your style, the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs annual state conference is this Wednesday through Saturday at the McCook Junior High.

The highlight of the week, of course is the annual Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival Friday and Saturday, featuring top flight talent such as the Steel Wheels, bringing a bluegrass-roots-traditional-alternative style of music to Southwest Nebraska, plus the high comedy and stunning drama of storyteller Beth Horner.

So let's enjoy the free irrigation Mother Nature provided for our lawns and farmland, along with the great entertainment many community volunteers are providing for us this week.
