Red Willow County deputies, along with several concerned citizens, recovered 14 dogs Saturday night that were discovered on a county road in rural McCook. The small breed, severely matted dogs, including terrier mixes, Shih Tzu, Yorkies and bichon mixes, are estimated to be under six years old, said Lorie Prestes of the McCook Humane Society. Prestes said this is the second time this has happened, with the same number and type of dogs found abandoned in Red Willow County this time last year. The dogs have never been groomed and show other signs of neglect. Many are so matted that flaps of knotted fur hang in strips from their bodies. Prestes couldn't say for sure if they came from an illegal breeder, but since the abandoned dogs are mostly males, it is likely. "They hang on to the females, they're the money makers," she said of puppy mills. With the influx of these dogs, volunteers would be welcomed to help out with the cleaning, bathing and other intake procedures, Prestes said. She is also in need of groomers, with her regular volunteer groomers out of town for Christmas. An investigation is underway to find out where these dogs came from; anyone with information concerning these dogs can contact the Red Willow County Sheriff's Office at 308-345-1850 or at or by contacting McCook Area Crime Stoppers at 1-866-345-5440 or at 1-866-345-5440 or http://crimestoppers.swnebr.com/NewCyberTipPage.htm. The McCook Humane Society can be reached on Facebook or by calling 308-345-2372.
