Letter to the Editor

Narrow path

Monday, October 14, 2013

Dear Editor,

I found the brief article, "Mere Dogma," in Tuesday's edition of the Gazette most interesting as an example of the modern liberal attitude toward the authority of the magisterium, which has a long history of fighting heresy and has laid down principles of morality that will lead its church members down that "narrow path" that Christ, himself indicated would lead to heaven. So the word "mere" which really means "poor" or "not enough" has an obvious purpose of belittling the word "dogma" but is way off the mark when applied to "dogma," which is a doctrine of the church lad down authoritatively based on the natural law and bulwarked by the supernatural law. And this dogma is for my protection, not to hold me in chains or shackle me, but rather to allow me more freedom. The author of "Mere Dogma" is quite frank that he believes that we should be free to have our own opinions and be respectful of the opinions of others, no matter what they may be. I suggest that such an attitude, which is the curse of "modern relatively" which opens that "wide road" that leads to "hell."

Sincerely,

J.G. McHale,

McCook, Nebraska
