Letter to the Editor

Changing times

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Dear Editor,

I have noticed in the past few years that there have been many changes in our lives, and that some are good and some not acceptable.

I saw on the news a demonstration of a small child with a iPad, and the child was moving his hand across the screen and pointing at what he wanted to see, but when the iPad was taken away and he had a magazine in front of him, well that child did not know how to turn a page.

In this modern day with computers, a large number of children do not know how to spell, for the computer does it for them, along with knowing how to write a complete sentence, and most children do not know what cursive handwriting is.

I also notice in the news that in some of your larger cities, some children who walk to school are escorted by a policeman.

On Facebook sometime back, someone posted a picture of a sign, which said "Warning the staff and teachers are armed with weapons and will use them when there is a threat."

This I found very shocking. I have also noticed that in the news, law enforcement is clamping down on people who text while driving, but have not focused on bicycle riders, and that is just as dangerous when they run through a stop sign.

Some of our children don't even say "thank you" or "you're welcome," instead they say "no problem."

So in closing I ask you, what changes that I have mentioned to you are good and which are bad?

Thank you,

Kevin Dunn,

Holbrook, Nebraska
