Letter to the Editor

Let voters vote?

Thursday, August 15, 2013

Dear Editor,

I could not help but chuckle at Red Willow County Commissioner Vera Dack suggesting that the voters be given a vote on keeping the county health department open or not.

It was only two years ago that our commissioners overturned the will of the citizens when we voted against building a new jail. These same commissioners then asked our city attorney to find a loop hole in the law that allowed such an action to occur.

It is because of the new jail that our commissioners have now been backed into a corner about needing new monies to pay for that folly and allow them to have monies set aside for other issues that may come up in the future.

Commissioner Dack's anger towards the county health department is unfounded.

The real victims are the employees of the county health department and the voters who said No at the voting booth.

If the voters do approve the closing of county health department, what's to say that those employees too find an attorney who will find a loophole and overturn that vote.

  • actually the commissioners ask the county attorney not the city attorney.

  • Does it really matter which attorney they asked? The fact remains they sought out the loop hole.
