After losing their battle to stay in the U.S., Clive and Joy Curtis visit with customers one last time on Thursday morning, at the doughnut shop they opened 12 years ago in McCook, Oz Tex. The Curtis' were not able to renew their legal status and began their trip back to Australia Thursday afternoon. In between coffee and doughnuts, long-time customers and friends signed a farewell banner and said their goodbye's. Well-wishers hoisted an Australian flag on top of the building for the farewell party. The shop will remain open under new owner, Ben Schow.

  • I'm going to miss Joy's smiling face. I live in Omaha but would make a stop in there whenever i was back to visit the area. She was always so friendly and the doughnuts and coffee were awesome. I hope the new owner is able to carry on that same atmosphere. Best wishes to the two of you!

  • The loss of these two good people from our community is maddening. All attempts to help them renew their visas were failures. The issue was not anything but bureaucratic nonsense. From being told they were not Australian to having the immigration office tell them their paperwork was not received even though Joy and Clive had a signed receipt that the paperwork had been received. Then when the paperwork was reviewed they said they would not use the same documents for Clive as they were using for Joy. Letters were written and nothing done to assist. It is a sad state of affairs when people who are trying to do things right get shafted this way. They would have loved to stay if they had been able to go home to Australia for visits and be able to reenter the country. I wish a letter writing campaign would make a difference for them but sadly I do not believe it will. We were fortunate to have them for 12 years and know that for many of us we have lifelong friends.
