Need term limits

Monday, January 16, 2012

Dear Editor,

I found it hard to believe that you would support Nebraska State Sen. Christensen and his self-centered legislation giving him and other state senators a $18,000 pay raise and to allow state senators to serve more terms in office.

Term limits were put in place to allow new ideas and give individuals other then the political élite a chance to serve in the Legislature. This idea also prevents a legislator from serving so long as to only care about the concerns of their political base but makes them listen to the ideas of many more people. A term-limited senator does not become beholden to the few that put up money for them to run. We see too often how a career politician becomes detached from those that put them in office.

Sen. Christensen needs to finish out his term in office and allow another individual to represent the people of the 44th District. He ran under these rules, and he should not think that he is so much better than anyone else who will replace him.

It's this kind of legislation that makes term limits a good policy in Nebraska and the country.
