Happy whatever
Dear Editor,
While reading the paper today I saw the letter before mine. Like usual for things for me, I appear to be a day late and a dollar short. Someone seems to have beaten me to the punch. But I feel this really needs extended upon.
First of all, even though this seems like it shouldn't be mentioned, we live in the USA. This is quite possibly one of the most diverse countries in the world, which means not all of us are of the same faith. Proclaiming your own personal messiah is the reason for the season is not only incredibly insensitive to others but also is very arrogant and takes a large hubris. Jesus may be the inspiration behind Christmas, but there are several other holidays in this time of year, including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus, Saturnalia, Yule and probably many others I can't think of at the moment. While Jesus is the reason for "your" season, it may not be the reason for other people's season. I know for a fact that there are Hebrew and secular citizens in the area.
Second, the phrase "reason for the season" ... there really is only one reason for the season.
That reason is the tilt of earth's axis (approximately 23.5 degrees) which causes the sun to hit the earth differently at different points of the year. That is the only reason for this season, and any season.
Please stop saying Jesus is the reason for the season. He is the reason for your season.
When you are with people whom you know are of the same faith, then you have every right to assume that Jesus has an important role in their life. But not everyone feels the same way about it.
And on that note, I would like to wish you a happy whatever you choose to celebrate.
