Letter to the Editor

What Thanksgiving

Monday, November 21, 2011

Dear Editor,

I am writing this in regard to my feeling of the American people toward Thanksgiving. I haven't seen anything or any ads about Thanksgiving.

It seems that people don't have time to thank the good Lord for what he has given them and their country. The stores can't even wait for Thanksgiving to be over before putting up Xmas lights and decorations. They worry more about Black Friday so they can make more money.

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time to thank the good Lord for what he has given you and your family. This is still the best country in the world to live in, but I wonder how much longer it might stay this way as morals and greed have pretty much taken the better part of the country.

I know I sure thank the good Lord every morning when I get up, that I am in the condition I am, and for all my good family.

Fran Broz,

McCook, Nebraska

  • I'm thanking God for my family, friends and the many blessings we have been given this year. Thanks to You Fran.... I agree, I haven't seen any Thanksgiving media this year either.

I'm actually thankful that I haven't seen Thanksgiving ads...and I would be thankful to not see Christmas ads either.

Fifth Avenue always seems to turn Christmas into "Crass"mas.

  • I read this and had to chuckle. I for one do not believe in a god. I use thanksgiving more as a fall 4th of july to celebrate events that helped make this great country. My wife is a god fearing person and she can't even wait til after thanksgiving to put up the tree. Another thing I find ironic is you are blasting the overlap of christmas over thanksgiving when in fact christmas is a celebration of the birth of your gods greatest gift. I am sure you are thankful for that. So therefore by having mangers and other christmas decor out during thanksgiving you in a way are giving thanks to your god for his greatest gift.

Also almost all holidays meanings are lost in this obsessed consumer society we have with marking every holiday by giving some sort of gift or buying something. If you truely want to celebrate these holidays quit buying into the marketing and celebrate without the cost "keeping up with the jones's" presents us with.

  • Commercials are there to sell to us. What are they selling for Thanksgiving?

I don't think that people have to yell it to the world in order for God to hear them say thank you.

I'm also sick of Christmas before Halloween let alone Thanksgiving.

  • Christmas is a time that is set aside for rejoicing the birth of Christ, Thanksgiving is a time that we give thanks to God for all of our blessings as well as give thanks to those that have embraced us in some way during the year and indeed our whole life. I suppose it's a sign of the times when a public service announcement wishing the masses a happy day of thanks, is overruled by the business of making money, which is how I took Fran's comment.
