Student Council supports 'Make-A-Wish,' disses slang
McCOOK, Nebraska -- A $1,000 donation was given to the Make a Wish Foundation, by the Student Council organization at the McCook Senior High.
Because of that and other activities, the organization was recognized by the state student council with a plaque and another silver "Outstanding Student Council Award" plaque. Both were presented to the McCook School Board at the regular meeting Monday night by MHS student council members Khyla Krepsik and Hollie Eiler.
In addition to its regular projects, the student council may undertake "Slash the Slang," where students are made aware of words that are used in an derogatory manner. Examples given were "retard" and "gay."
School board president Tom Bredvick read a report by McCook Elementary PTO coordinator Laurie Brenning, that outlined the organization's recent activities.
For the "Boxtops for Education," Mrs. Buddenberg's first grade classroom collected the most and will have an ice cream party. The PTO received $1,567 for the box tops.
A current fundraiser underway is collecting receipts from Schmick's Market. If $150,000 worth of receipts is brought in by the end of the year, Schmick's will make a $1,000 donation.
Through the year, each class that brings in the most receipts for the month will get a party at Schmick's "playland."
