Letter to the Editor

Wake up America

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Dear editor,

I hear nearly every day public television ads blaming President Obama for our national debt.

Here are the totals from after these presidential terms:

Reagan, $2.8 trillion;

Bush, $4.3 trillion;

Clinton, $5.7 trillion;

Bush, $10.4 trillion;

and after two years of Obama, $14.3 trillion.

These figures scare me too, and I voted for all of these presidents, except George W. Bush for his second term.

I never did think we belonged in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some people tell me if I had been there I would not make that remark. Bring the troops home and guard our borders. I have nothing against Hispanics that are in this country. They do the work that the Caucasians don't like to do or won't do.

When President Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965, no one expected the average life-span to be what it is today.

No entity has tried to control the prices of prescriptions or the price hospitals or practitioners can charge for their procedures.

In defense of doctors and hospitals, no one has tried to stop the amount of money that they have to pay in malpractice suit settlements. I understand some of this, "believe it or not." This is kind of a two-edged sword.

This old free enterprise system is the best. Don't get me wrong. When I was actively engaged in farming we paid 39.4 percent of our net income to the federal government in taxes. I did not like it at all, but now we get a pretty fair S.S. check. Never figured it out, but we have reaped more than we put in. Many others that are 75-80 years old have also used more than they put in.

Medicaid is supposed to be split, by the states and federal government. This is a huge expense for these entities.

We need to wake up and not be so narrow-minded and selfish when it comes to health care. I listen to people put down the Canadian health care system. Maybe they truly know some of the facts, maybe not. We have talked to several people from Canada and they seem to think it is not perfect, but it is as good as you can expect.

Some of them say, "What is the U.S. Government thinking about?" The Canadians understand why we have this huge national debt. Military. Medicare. Medicaid.

No one can deny that we probably have the best health care of any country on Earth.

The American people need to pay a tax or "premium" on their net income for health care once a year or when their taxes are paid. More dollars have to be paid for health care and someone has to throttle down the cost of health care services provided.

We need to change our tax code and stop favoring the millionaires. If our elected officials do not stop favoring the wealthy to get their votes, this nation will fall and will no longer be the great country it is today.

If I am still alive when we elect a new president, I will vote for the one who favors universal health care legislation.

God bless America,

Eldon Moore

  • You might want to explain this Eldon"...We need to change our tax code and stop favoring the millionaires. If our elected officials do not stop favoring the wealthy to get their votes, this nation will fall and will no longer be the great country it is today. , , ,"

    I don't know who you consider to be wealthy but I would guess that for every millionaire in this country there are at least fifty citizens that are not millionaires. Do the VOTES of millionaires count for more in the ballot box? Help me here.

    The top 1% income earners in the US pay 40% of the total income taxes. How could anyone quibble with that? Seems like they are taxed enough already. The bottom 50% pay less than 3% of the total income taxes collected in the US. Heaven forbid if we asked the bottom 50% to chip in more.

    We don't have an income problem, we have a spending problem. If we think we have problems now, just wait until Obamacare kicks in and we get a taste of the real cost of universal health care. If one believes Obamacare will reduce healthcare cost, please see me about my ocean front property for sale just across the state line in Kansas.

    Unfortunately we have become a country where we want all the good things in life and think that others should pay for them. So far we have proven that more and bigger government is not the answer but many still try to head us down that road to destruction.

  • On the premise that 'We the People' 'own,' and are supposed to 'run' this country, through our elected 'Representatives,' then the buck stops with US, 'USA,' and the 'us(always).' We spend so much money on Illegals, through Welfare, and Medical welfare to the Lazy, plus Foreign Aid, to countries that want us destroyed, we deserve the fiscal shellacking we are receiving.

    Be our Representatives be Liberal or Conservative, if they are not working toward bailing this country out of the hole it is in, then we need go to the ballot box, and vote them away from their lucrative income, and also pass a law against the benefits they have given themselves.

    Does everyone understand that we presently provide Foreign Aid to more than fifty of the fifty-eight Nations that live to destroy this country?? Yep, We are paying them to shoot us.

    That is only a start, but this old war-horse, don't not like paying someone money who is shooting at our your young Military people, and killing them.

    This nation needs return to the standards of about 1885, called 'Pride in accomplishment,' and throw away all the Pork, and Entitlements, other than those our citizens have paid into, all their lives, to benefit from. I speak of Welfare without absolute cause, citizen rights to illegal peoples, and all Pork spending eliminated, and de-funded, immediately.

    Then, maybe, but only then, IMO, will the people return to the philosophy of 'Success comes from better Ideas, and hard work to obtain that end.' Unless we get back to that thought line, we are doomed to living as 'Ennui.'

    We can blame our leadership all we desire, but we the people placed so many fiscal demands on our Representatives, they began to realize they had to play the 'Pork' game, to please the voters, if they wanted to remain in the position of Power, they quickly had grown addicted to, and would do anything to maintain, even if not realizing it, spending their country into bankruptcy, not understanding the law of indebtedness 'doubling,' and able to rely on the next generation to keep them in office. In short, we all are to blame. Our Representatives, simply played the lead Role, in this hazardous time we have entered, and may not be able to recover from.

    I'm done. Ponder, please.

  • Here's an idea..... how about we get back to the basics of our political foundation! Why are the elected representatives getting paid so much for what they are doing, or more adequately put, "Not Doing". I'll bet that if the national average wage was assessed for our representatives, there would be less "personal agenda driven" politicians interested in the position. Those that did get the position would HAVE to have our nation's interest in mind as their true income would depend on their own business not the American's tax dollars to pay their bills. I know that there is a snowballs chance in hell that that would ever work its way back into the American political system but as I see it, the rats are lured to the trap by cheese. Cut out the cheese and see what kind of hardnosed, Getter Done True Blooded Americans come to bat and I would bet to say that we would have a lot fewer $10,000.00+ dinner parties thrown by our elected officials.

    We don't seem to be swayed by the immoralities of the political parties anymore, so why should we expect them to do us, the American Citizen, the justice of upholding our voted wishes.

    Q. If you capsize a boat full of politicians in the ocean.... what do you get?

    A. A big case of pollution.

    Will SOMEONE, ANYONE, that has NO political or law background PLEASE run for our political offices?

    Our Once Great County depends on YOU! Then again, how bad could a national deficit default be? We just file a bankruptcy for the monies owed and we're scot free right? OH Yeah... there's just one thing.... The world will change the world currency, we won't be able to print our own money to pay our debt and anything that we import will be 100% more expensive. No big deal right? We just use our own Gross National Product..... WAIT! that is almost nearly, ONLY agriculture. Everything else is imported. Even if it is an American company, the odds are that it's made in China.

    America's in peril and We as Citizens of The United States of America don't have the RIGHT, to stand up and oppose our government, we have an OBLIGATION!

    Stop the terrorism? Where are the terrorists? At the airports? In sleeper cells? OR..... Are we being terrorized from Washington? Want to bring a county to its knees? Break it financially, take away it's bargaining chips and suddenly it's the friendless kid on the playground. Standing alone against all the others. No allies, no resources, and basically stranded amongst his own pity and despair. "Who is that kid?"... "Aw, that's just Sam..... You know........ Joe Blow's uncle..... He's a NOBODY!"

  • It is because our political system is a snapshot of our own society. We want all the benefits without paying the price. We want to be lazy farm managers and not suffer the consequences, so we lobby our politicians to subsidize us. We want to be inefficient with our energy production and not suffer the consequences, so we lobby our politicians. We don't want to be competitive with our health care system and suffer the consequences, so we lobby our politicians. We don't want to pay our medical bills, so the insurance companies lobby the politicians. We don't want to save for our own retirements, so we lobby our politicians.

    As long as we are happy letting someone else pay our bills, and assume responsibility for our own unbridled greed, our political system will continue to carry our weight. We are well past putting this burden on our children, or our grandchildren, or even our great-grandchildren. Yes the top 1% pay 40% of the governments "revenues", and the top 5% pay 60%, so taxing them more is NOT going to solve anything. It is the spending that must not just slow down, it must be cut.

  • Please explain MR. Chunky why a retired couple should pay $5000 in Federal income tax, and a multiple billion dollar corporation like General Electric pays ZERO, nana, nothing. There are major loop holes in the tax code that allow this, plug the loop holes and we will start to pay the bills.

    I just have a hard time explaining that one.

    It is a big bunch of crap that there can not be a bipartisan deal made, both sides are to blame for this mess, time for both sides to give a little and come to an agreement!

    I wonder sometimes if we should remove all tax loopholes. Then maybe folks could all be angry at the government together, and it would eliminate a tool for manipulating the populace. Of course, I imagine it would eliminate a lot of worthwhile programs and charities.

  • If a retired couple can afford to pay $5000 on interest and dividends, they probably should pay taxes on that. There are no excuses for GE, other than, through their lobbyists, they got a sweet deal, aka a loophole.

    I sat we close all loopholes and implement an across the board flat tax, and cut spending. But in the real world, spending cuts is the most efficient way to balance the budget. Nobody can afford more taxes.
