Letter to the Editor

Only hibernating

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Dear Editor,

Some members on the Hitchcock District School Board, am I calling them by their proper name, are saying the Bears are dead. I wonder. Do they think if they say it enough it will happen?

Others say the Bears are not dead but hibernating. Sightings of Little Bears and Big Bears have been seen in Culbertson and around the countryside.

We will wait and see.

Until then,

Go Bears

Hope Strong

Culbertson, Nebraska

  • I think it would be nice to just enjoy the kids for what the are doing, what ever they are called instead of being stuck in such rut in the past. Let the kids have their time to shine, you did try supporting them instead of tearing them down.I'm not asking you to forget the past just let the kids of today be able to look back at their past with pride. Go Falcon Nation Respectfully Falcon#1

  • This pride can be taken too far and is overshadowing the first and foremost important thing here...proper, updated education for our children. Let's respect that instead of being so bitter about "not winning" or being over zealous because you did "win". We need to form one team and be proud of those students who are involved. Push them to succeed regardless of what color they wear or mascot they choose.

How about no more Falcon or Bears. What about having the kids vote for a new school colors and new mascot? Make it their decision...it's their school!

  • This bear has gone through metamorphosis! I have changed into a Falcon! Please remember it is for the students and THEIR education!

  • They are the Hitchcock County Board of Education.

The Culbertson Board of Education dissolved the Culbertson School District in 2004. Like it or not, the district is gone. The State of NE will never create two NEW districts, when they are encouraging districts to consolidate.

It would be crazy to pick new colors and mascots. News sports uniforms and cheerleader uniforms have just need purchased. To change those would be very costly.

I've never heard any kids in HS say they wish they could pick new colors or mascots. Seems like the adults (who don't attend events and have admitted that they would NEVER attend events no matter where they are played) are the only ones who have a problem with the colors, mascot, location, name, etc.

I think it's time to grow up. It makes me sad to see Culbertson residents bash the HC School. (I am a Culbertson resident and a CHS graduate.) Wouldn't it be wonderful to welcome everyone, reguardless of where they graduated and support each of them.

  • I also agree with "Parent"...I went to High School at "Republican Valley" and now is Southwest High School. Bartley and Indianola have adjusted very well, all the kids get along and parents are all very supportive. People just need to give "NEW THINGS" a chance, they dont always turn out badly. I was a "MUSTANG" but now a "ROUGHRIDER"!

  • The students did choose their colors and mascot when Trenton gave up being Warriors and Culbertson gave up being Bears. I really don't see the need to change again and I agree with Parent of HC Student, the cost of unifroms, etc would not make sense. I'm sure the students would agree.

  • The students, teachers and parents of Hitchcock County get along great. It's the people who don't want to be involved that have a problem with the school.
