Letter to the Editor

Support bond

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Dear Editor,

I am voicing my support for the upcoming Hitchcock County School Bond. The school district of Hitchcock County is facing some tough decisions and I think the Board of Education has done an exceptional job of listening to the public and coming up with a reasonable plan. Both towns in the district have contributed greatly to the success of our school and I feel that keeping a school in each town is not only fair but monetarily and educationally the best plan.

Our buildings are getting old and are in need of repair. No matter what happens in this election the Board of Education will be forced to put money into buildings. My vote is that we use our money wisely and get as much out of it as we can. The gym, music room, pre-school room and old wood shop are in very good shape at Hitchcock County Elementary. The current plan is to keep this part of the existing building and add a new elementary wing, eliminating the 1920s two-story building. At the Hitchcock County Junior/ Senior High School the south building, or the Junior High wing and the cafeteria, would be kept. New classrooms would be added, while eliminating the 1920s two-story building there as well. These changes would give each campus some much needed updates.

Supporting these updates would mean a vote FOR the bond on May 10th.

The villages of Culbertson and Trenton have increased in population according to the last census and the Hitchcock County School system is currently one of the few in the area increasing in enrollment. I am just one person with one opinion but I feel that Hitchcock County is a very viable and exceptional school system. The current set up, with the elementary in Culbertson and Junior/Senior High in Trenton, has been working. The kids and parents involved with the school will tell you the same.

Working in the system I have seen a great bond form between teachers, students, parents and the communities. We have a common goal and that is to be the best we can while representing the Falcons. I teach my players at a young age that when they put on their jersey they not only represent themselves but everyone associated with our school. I encourage everyone to be informed and think about the future of our district, our students, as well as both communities involved before making their choice.

Go Falcons!
