Letter to the Editor

Ashamed of Nebraska

Friday, February 4, 2011

Dear Editor,

I am 50 years old and until I saw this ("Christensen introduces 'birther bill'" (http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1700284.html) today, have never been ashamed or embarrassed my Nebraska heritage. I am appalled at this lunacy.

Frankly, I wouldn't be able to prove my or my parents citizenship based on your lunatic proposal.

And lastly, why do you continue to waste valuable time and resources on this spendthrift non-issue?

Throughout my years in various parts of this exceptional country, I have always tried to act as I felt most Nebraskans did -- with common sense, decency, friendliness, and a lack of pretense or need to self-aggrandize.

This issue of "proof" is nothing but egotistical blowhards stuffed with resentment and ignorant self-induced fear.

I am even further ashamed that any political representative would actually promote such hate and fear based diatribes, much less put it forth for legislation.

Shame on you.

Karen Poels

formerly of Grand Island,

currently of Pennsylvania

  • hey karen, i believe pennsylvania is also considering a birther bill. you might have to move. lol

Assemblyman Daryl Metcalfe told WND he is preparing to circulate a memo among his fellow GOP lawmakers for cosponsors for his proposal that would demand documentation of constitutional eligibility.

"We aren't sworn in until Jan. 4," he said. "Once we're sworn in we'll be introducing the legislation that would require presidential candidates to prove their natural born citizenship before they are allowed to file petitions to have their name on the state ballot."

  • Why doesn't President Obama just release a certified copy of his birth certificate and make this all go away?

We all have had to get them for something or another.

    Wallis

  • Karen, looks like you'll be moving again. Good question Wallis, from what I can determine the main problem is the wrong name is on the long form (Berry). Wow that would be a embarrassment.

@Remington81 Care to provide some links to back that up? You birthers are quite silly in my opinion.

  • Remington's comment is almost proof that virtually nothing would satisfy the birthers in this regard since our duly elected president has released to public view a copy of the only sort of document the State of Hawaii provides. From what I can determine the diehard conservatives are desperate for any little issue they can dredge up that might defame the President or distract from the fact that he's doing reasonably well under the circumstances at least as well as his predecessor( not that hard,I know)and to contribute to their avowed goal of making him a one term President. There's no tactic too low and no depth to which they will not sink to further their aims, witness the multiple suits by Orly Taitz Lawyer *** dentist *** real estate agent- most of which were dismissed and only ended up costing Ms. Taitz considerable cash- and the almost laughably silly attempt to pass a grade school quality forgery off as a Kenyan birth certificate.Conservatives have no interest in a unified America so long as they believe they can detect a slight advantage for their cause in divisiveness.

  • Nice job painting with a broad brush Davis.

Kind of funny to hear a person who supports Obama the man who said Republicans can come along they just have to sit in the back ofthe car, talking about a unified America. The only reason Obama is actually listening to Repubs is because of the November elections.

I for one am much more worried about Egypt, the paralells between this and Iran undr Jimmy Carter are very scary. The fact domestic Oil production is down over 75% chiefly due to Obamas oil drilling moratotium. The continuing poor Economy. Continuing 9+% Unemployment. The administrations refusal to obey a Federal Judge who has rules Health Care Unconstitutional. The out of controll Washington Spending and the huge Deficit to worry about his not wanting to put this issue to rest by releasing his actual Birth Certificate.

  • no one said cleaning up after 8 years of bush was going go be easy chaco.

  • from another conservative: i am not in the "birther" category. however, the negatives noted by davis could also be said of the liberals. it all boils down to which side of the aisle you sit on

  • Well, let me think on that one. How about this, its ceases to be Bushes fault the day Obama leaves office. Everything was clinton, gore's fault for the 8 years of bush. "the clinton, gore recession" etc.

Thats what bothers me about you, you just can't seem to see that everyone does it. I remember in the 7th year of the Bush presidency when Sean Hannity stepped up to defend Bush by saying that he inherited the clinton, gore recession. 7 freaking years. wow

The stop to the drilling was in responce to the largest oil spill in history.

the Egyptians are presiding over the conflict in egypt. Obama is not the leader there. Im sure if bush was still in he would send troops to take over the country and instill democracy.

Do you have a link that unemployment is at 19%? I prefer to fall back on the words of Mccain when the republicans ran things. "this is a mental recession". And there is the republican line of "people are lazy and dont want to work"

The decision of the court is being appealed, Thats how our system works.

  • Okay, this for all you Birfers out there, including the Nebraska legislature:

As of today, 74 legal actions challenging the President's legitimacy have been filed nationwide. One or more of these suits has covered every argument put forward, and all 74 have been DISMISSED at the most basic original/trial court level, no appeal has been successful, and the failed litigants have only managed to prove their own stupidity. (One case is still pending at the appeals level and it's being lawyered by Gary Kreep and Orly Taitz, so that's going nowhere) The US Supreme Court has made a total of 15 rulings on these cases, all in favor of the President. Appelants have had to pay court costs in 64 of the cases, the government has defended in 6, and the President has only had to defend 3.

In pursuit of this lunacy, several attorneys have been sanctioned by the courts involved and revealed to be totally incompetent, and several military officers have ruined their careers, with one now sitting in Leavenworth (...and he even admitted at his trial that he had been misled into a horrible mistake).

As Karen says, the legislatures chasing this ARE wasting their time, because the US Constitution determines who is qualified to run for President, not the states, and that is how it will be ruled in the courts.

Because of the power that this fantasy has over your minds, reality doesn't enter into your thinking. You will NEVER find a legitimate way to discredit the President on this, but you won't deal with REAL issues and will continue to thrash around helplessly while he moves toward an easy re-election in 2012.

  • Ryan, mark this on your calendar and remind me in 2012. I am predicting a one-term presidency.

-- Posted by doodle bug on Wed, Feb 9, 2011, at 4:36 PM
  • Ryan Masters to bad your bag man Obama just will not agree to release needed documents to close this issue?? To bad he has chosen to ignore the world with this issue much like those who refuse to pay for forced mandatory health care laws recent passed by 1 vote now being fought by all who care about the future of our country and not you and your family of leftist socialist idiots will soon find out we have had enough of your crap......

  • Jlake just once I'd like to see commentary like yours from someone who I thought actually knew what "socialism" is,other than just some word your masters have told you is sufficient to scare the uninformed into acting against their better interests. Why should this president establish the precedent of having to verify the circumstances of his birth? He has released a copy of the form the state of Hawaii issues to all and considers legal proof of the place and circumstances of birth. But I stick by my original statement that nothing will satisfy those determined to undermine this presidency regardless of what it costs the nation all the while calling themselves patriots.I wonder why this is the first President for whom this has been a concern. You do realize the mandate was originally a republican idea?http://tinyurl.com/yz5ah7
