Letter to the Editor

Shared sadness

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

EDITOR'S NOTE -- The following letter was recently sent to Mike Hendricks, writer of the weekend edition's "Mike at Night" column:

Mike:

Jerry and I want to commend you on your articles that you write for the McCook Gazette. We always look forward to reading them. The one that you just wrote on the holidays really hit home to us. We lost our son Greg, 10 years ago this Christmas. Yes, the empty chair at the holidays, no matter which one, always brings tears to the eyes and many wonderful memories. It is sad, but now all we have is a candle to light in his memory at this table.

We could relate so much to your joy with the holidays and then as you said, people start dying, and nothing is ever the same. I have lost both my Mom and Dad, but losing our child was so hard to understand and as you said things are never the same.

Life is fragile, as we all know, and more so for those of us who have lost a child.

Keep up the good articles.

Sincerely,

Jerry and Nancy Renard
