State Patrol targeting seat belt enforcement

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

We may have to loosen our belts after Thursday's feast, but the Nebraska State Patrol wants us to tighten our belts -- seat belts, that is.

This week's national "Click It or Ticket" campaign covers a heavy travel time in Nebraska, with both the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and the Nebraska game on Friday.

"Combine those two events, and you're bound to get some pretty heavy traffic across the state," NSP Superintendent Col. Bryan Tuma said. "We are encouraging motorists to plan ahead, giving themselves plenty of time to reach their destination."

Not only should you allow more time, but remember to wear your seat belt each and every time you get into the vehicle this week.

Troopers will have plenty of time to help you remember, thanks to nearly $30,000 in a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety which will pay for overtime hours for them and communications specialists during the campaign.

Troopers will concentrate on reducing crash causing behaviors such as speeding, following too closely, failure to buckle-up and impaired or distracted driving.

If you have an emergency or would like to report a distracted or impaired driver, call the NSP Highway Helpline when safe to do so at *55 from any cellular phone or 1-800-525-5555 from any landline.

Motorists wanting road, weather or construction information should dial 511 or log onto the Nebraska Traveler Information website at www.511nebraska.org

And, don't forget to tighten up your seat belt, even if you have to loosen up the one in your beltloops.

How exactly does not buckling up contribute to causing a crash? The passage of the seat belt law was a real killer for me. Thanks government! I wasn't sure how to make decisions for my self. Always feels good to know the government is watching out for my best interests, with a nice fine to help me remember!
