Secrets of success
Dear Editor,
I once asked a very wise and very successful man what were his secrets of management.
"There's no big secret," he replied, and proceeded to outline three of his guidelines.
1. Provide your new employees with the best training you can give.
2. Make available continuing education and training so they are at least aware of new advances in their particular field.
3. Provide them with a clean, safe, EFFICIENT working environment to help them do the best job they possibly can. After all, we expect nothing less than their best.
I think we have done a good job providing the first two for city employees. However, in the last few years we have failed on the third point, especially when it concerns those in the "city offices," fire department and police department.
This is apparent to those who have toured those departments. As one gentleman remarked, "For the first time in my life, I was actually ashamed of our fine city."
I doubt there are very many people out there who, if they were in a management position, would allow their employees to work in those conditions.
Earlier I said "we" because all citizens of McCook are the city. We all can take credit when things go right and we all must take the blame when things fail. A new municipal building is a necessity, not a luxury. It will be one of those things "we" can all take credit for and be proud of.
Sincerely,
Jack Rogers,
McCook
