Southwest Security bill is a good start
Friday, August 13, 2010
President Barack Obama was set to sign the Southwest Border Security Bill today, providing $600 million to hire 1,000 new U.S. Border Patrol agents, 250 more U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and 250 more U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.
It will also fund more surveillance drones and new communications equipment.
We doubt anyone expects the bill to seal the border, but it is a good answer to political leaders who say we must seal the borders before we can take other steps to deal with illegal immigration.
The truth is, until we make America less inviting to those who slip across the border without permission, they will find away to get here. The next step is shutting the door to illegal employment, and providing a way for guest workers to legally provide the labor so many American businesses depend upon.
