Farmers Market open July 3

Friday, June 25, 2010

Dear Editor,

Many gardeners may have already planted their gardens preparing to harvest the fresh produce that gardeners and farmers are growing this year.

McCook Main Street Farmers Market is a social event where you meet friends and neighbors while you shop. This event is not only a growers' market, but open to baked goods such as breads, cookies, cakes, rolls and fruit pies. No cream pies or baked goods that will require refrigeration will be allowed. Inspected meat vendors must be approved and provide refrigeration.

The Farmers Market will be at the old West Ward School. The vendors and customers will come in at the north entrance at D Street. At the present time, plans are for vendors to park on the blacktop south of the school. We will park the vehicles facing the east by the trees, then place them where they fit in well. Should there be a change in where to set up, we will let you know at that time. The opening will be 8 a.m. to noon, or when the vendors leave, which usually is at noon or when they sell out.

Items offered for sale must be home-grown produce or home baked products. We invite anyone who has crafts to bring them to sell. This has been a different growing season, so some of the produce may be late.

Last year, apricots, apples and other fruits, various kinds of vegetables that gardeners had in abundance were brought to the market.

We will open 8 a.m. July 3. When the produce is ready, we want to be prepared for the growers to have a place to sell their produce. For more information, please contact Ivan Schmid at (308) 345-3081 or Sonia Caldwell, (308) 345-4703.

Sincerely,

Ivan D. Schmid,

Farmers Market Manager
