Asleep at the wheel

Monday, June 21, 2010

Dear Editor

Where is our good old government watchdog when we need him? It appears to me the NRD was asleep at the wheel while some of our fine citizens were stealing water right under their meters. I was appalled that all the perpetrators got was a cease-and-desist order, (I hope there is more penalty coming)

I was brought up to believe that if you did something wrong you had to pay the price. I was also brought up to believe if you did something criminal the price would be very expensive.

I feel that the NRD should issue the stiffest penalties they can to the water thieves who deliberately went out of their way to bypass their water meters. Don't pussy-foot around; make this an example so no one else even thinks about trying it.

Nebraska's water problems are just at the infant stage. It is only going to get worse. The rules were created to try and get a handle on the problem and protect the resource for all people in the state, so if you can't play by the rules you don't play the game. Shut them down for the year and tell them they had better hope it continues to rain, then maybe if they can get by their arrogance they might be able to get water back next year.

I do not look forward to the morning I wake up and find my well has gone dry because some thieves thought they were entitled to what ever they wanted.

Paul J. Forch

  • I agree! We will see if the NRD Boards apply any restrictions on the violators. Their history has not been good on enforcement or just plain water policy. It is past time small ag producers, county folk and city slickers all wake-up and hold the NRD accountable.

  • Imagine if Wal Mart caught shoplifters and just told them don't do it again. What do you think they would do? Keep stealing or stop? Same thing here these people stole and got no sanction for it think they will try it again?

Goodness, it appears the NRD doesn't care if they steal water from Kansas or their fellow Nebraskan. The NRD is nothing but a joke!!

  • HOW RIGHT YOU ARE MR. FORCH!!!

Glad other feel like I do about the NRD'S.

They are a big joke and hand holding politicians!!!

The Meeting in McCook should have a big crowd, if they allow the public. I hope they have a big room and lots of chairs!!

I'm sure the Govenor and his fellow politicians will make it sound and look good.

Too bad the Great Ben Nelson isnt there too tell them how to make it work better and never get caught.

I sure hope the NRD's and their boards get it figured out soon.

Maybe they should tour the rest of the State and help them get rid of their water problems!!

Seems S. W. Nebraska has a problem of their own, created by The NRD's , their board of Directors and some Southwest senators!
