Letter to the Editor

How many days?

Friday, April 9, 2010

Dear Editor,

In response to Paul Schneider's article in the April 2 issue which was titled "Good Thursday," saying Jesus was only in the tomb two nights and three days:

He based his opinion on Matthew 12:40, which reads in the NIV translation, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the earth ..."

My Concordia Self Study Bible exlplains that common Jewish reckoning of time included the nights of at least part of the first day, which was Friday, and part of the third day, which would include Sunday, which would make the three nights.

Helen Gehring,

McCook

  • Helen, I believe that would be true, but only if 'day's' were cited, but in this case 'nights' were also separated and noted. Since Mary Magdalene arrived at the crypt prior to sunrise, we can only count a partial day on the day of crucifixion, Thursday, and the parcial Evening of Sunday (Saturday night).

Counting backward, Sat night would be the first part of Sunday, as God/Hebrew would see it. Saturday, Friday, Thursday = 3-nights; and Saturday, Friday and Thursday (partial) would equate to three days, therefore crucifixion would have been on Thursday, with death at about 3PM (Even).

This year is one of those rare years where the days fell exactly as they did when Jesus was crucified.

Jesus was resurrected, prior to the 'Wave offering' of the first crop, Barley,' on Sunday morning (day one of counting the Omer to Pentecost) which in this year, apx 33AD, also fell the pagan holiday of Easter.

In a way, we tend to get too wrapped up in the day, and not the man who paid the price for our redemption from the death sentence for being a person of Sin. Let us all focus on Him who paid the price, for us all, who will allow his payment to take effect, brothers and sisters, adopted into the Royal Family of God, through the only act that allows that adoption, the suffering, crucifixion, death and resurrection, of Jesus, the Messiah, our God, YHVH/Yashuah.

I believe that Paul says most correctly, as to the day of crucifixion, based on scripture, literally read.

In Messiah, Jesus, His Blessing on you. Arley
